Have finally got this to work after a lot more headscratching. If anyone can give me any clues as to why this error is appearing I'd be most grateful! I've tried uninstalling the JRE and reinstalling and also doing a registry clean using CCleaner incase there are any old references to the JRE/JavaEE but it didn't help.
